Silchar, May 20 – In a shocking case of moral policing, Rangirkhari Police on Tuesday arrested three individuals for allegedly taking the law into their own hands and brutally assaulting a man accused of stealing a mobile phone. The incident took place in the Uttar Krishnapur area near Second Link Road, Silchar, drawing serious concerns about rising vigilantism in the region.

The accused have been identified as Manna Chanda, son of Monuranjan Chanda; Palash Das (19), son of Srikanta Das; and Swarup Chanda (30), son of Gopika Ranjan Chanda — all residents of the Uttar Krishnapur and Second Link Road areas. According to police sources, The arrested trio was part of a group that tied the alleged thief to a vehicle and mercilessly beat him with sticks and brooms in broad daylight. In a disturbing turn, the group even shaved the victim’s head in an apparent attempt to shame him publicly.
The arrested men accused the man stealing a phone in a broad day light.
An Eyewitnesses report that the incident occurred in full public view, yet no one intervened. Bystanders reportedly stood by silently as the man was assaulted, raising questions about the community’s response to unlawful acts of justice.
Local residents attempted to justify the attack, citing repeated incidents of theft in the area and alleged police inaction. “We’ve filed several complaints with Cachar Police, but nothing was done. People are frustrated,” said a local resident on condition of anonymity.
However, Rangirkhari Police acted swiftly upon receiving information and arrested the three accused involved in the mortal policying incident. A case has been registered and further investigation is going on.
This incident has once again highlighted the growing problem of vigilantism and the urgent need for both law enforcement responsiveness and public awareness in Silchar.
