A man from Ghungoor, Silchar, has been arrested for allegedly running a fake government job racket that defrauded several people out of nearly ₹42 lakh. The accused, Nishit Ranjan Das, is said to have promised aspirants jobs in the Water Resources Department in exchange for large sums of money.
Das reportedly targeted residents of the Tarapur area, collecting hefty amounts over time while assuring them of confirmed government postings. After vanishing for nearly two years, he was finally tracked down by the victims themselves, who handed him over to Tarapur police on Friday.

During police questioning, Das admitted to the scam and disclosed the names of his alleged accomplices: Hari Prasad Chetia, a businessman from Guwahati, and Anup Kalita, a practicing lawyer in the High Court.
Authorities have now launched a detailed investigation to identify others involved and to recover the defrauded money. Police have urged other potential victims to come forward with information as the probe widens.
