A 35 year old woman from Mangan district of Sikkim has fall in the trap of online job scam in Facebook, where she loss Rs 6 lakh.

The incident has took place between 8 April – 15 April, 2025. She falls in the trap of scammers after she respond to a fake work-from-home advertisement in Facebook that promised good income. Thinking it was a real opportunity, she started talking to the people who posted the job.

They asked her to send money in small amounts, saying it was needed to start the work or to get higher returns. Trusting them, she followed the instruction and transferred money in multiple transaction to the bank accounts that provided by the scammers.

According to police, the woman was told she would get more money if she kept sending payments. But after she sent ₹6 lakh, she didn’t received the payments or returns as promised. Also, the scammers stopped talking to her completely. That’s when she realized something was wrong.

She immediately went to police station and filed a complaint at Sadar Police Station. A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 – Sections 318(3), 319(2), and 111(2)(b).

Further investigation is going on in this scam and police launched operation to trace the bank accounts and digital footprint of the fraud.

The police have urged the public to be extra careful while dealing with the online job or anything’s offers. Many of these posts are fake and made by the fraudsters to scam people.

Some Tips To Stay Safe From Online Scam or Job Scam in social media like Facebook

  • Always verify the company and the person which are offering JOB, especially on social media
  • Never transfer money or personal details to the people without proper verification.
  • Conduct background checks before sharing personal documents or bank details.
  • Never trust to the offer of promising quick or high returns in social media, it may be scam.
  • Reports suspicious activities to cybercrime Helpline 1930.
