On August 27, People staged a Protest Nabanna Abhijan to the Bengal state Secretariat demanding West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjeeโs resignation over rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata and alleged failure to ensure the safety of women. The Kolkata Police use tear gas, water cannon to stop the protest Nabanna Abhijan.
When the protestors started march CM Mamata Banerjee was at her secretariat office. The protestors broke the police barricades and also started throwing stones at the security personnels.
No permission was granted for the protest march and the ruling Trinamool Congress claimed yesterday that there was a conspiracy to incite violence during the rally. Manoj Kumar Verma, ADG (Law & Order) and IGP, stated, “This programme is illegal. No organisation has sought permission from us. Legally, the procedure has not been followed.” Kolkata Police turned Nabanna into a fortress, they deployed as many as 6000 officer to stop the protest from reaching the secretariat from any direction.
A police officer said, โWe deployed a few hundred personnel and anti-riot vehicles because intelligence reports indicated that some miscreants might attack policemen.โ Police also set up Barricades on the Kona Expressway, Howrah road and every road and lane around Nabanna as precautionary measure.
Police Used Tear Gas, Lathi charge, Water Cannons to stop Nabanna Abhijan
The protesters began arriving in small groups from Kolkata and Howrah around 12:30. The crowd began increasing while the protestors has no permission for the march. At around 1 pm the police used water cannons on the Howrah bridge to disperse a crowd that tried to break thorough barricade. The protesters than started throwing stones to the police in which the police lob tear gas and lathi charges. A policeman was beaten with sticks at Howrah Maidan, while another officer suffered head injuries during stone-throwing at Santragachhi. Police Superintendent Praveen Tripathi said they have not yet determined how many police officers were injured.
