Kerala Wayanad Landslide: Death toll rises to 80

A massive landslide took place at Kerala ’s Wayanad, at least 36 people have died and hundreds feared trapped. Among the dead people a one year old child of a Nepalese family living in Thondernad village died, according to Wayand districts authorities.

The death toll rises to 80 and 100 people feared missing. The rescue opeartion is underway.

The landslide took place between 2 am and 4 am, in the hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanand district in Kerala.

The Central and state authorities have launched a rescue operation to rescue the people who were trapped in the debris of landslide. Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala and Noolpuzha village are among the affected areas which cut off by the lanslides.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said that the NDRF team as well Fireforce team have been deployed in the affected area. Two teams of Kannur Defense Security Force have also instructed to move to Wayanad landslide area to assist in the rescue effort.

Two Air Force helicopter has depart from Sulur at 7.39 am.

Helpline number Provided for emergency for Kerala Wayanad Landslide

The National Health Mission has opened a control room and issued helpline for emergency assistance.

The helpline number are 9656938689 and 8086010833.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Announce ex-gratia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoles death. He said, “Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM Shri @pinarayivijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there.”

He announced an ex-gratia of Rs.2 Lakh from Prime Minister Relief Fund for the next of kin of each of the deceased. The injured people will give Rs. 50,000.

President of India Condoles death.

President Droupadi  Murmu said, “Pained by the loss of lives in massive landslides in Wayanad, Kerala. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and for the success of rescue operations.”
