Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a major step forward in cancer care during a press meet at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Sunday. A robotic surgery machine has launched at the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati, making it the first cancer center in Northeast India to offer this advanced technology.

CM Stated through social media, “Assam has started this Bohag celebration by dedicating the facility of northeast India’s first onco-robotic surgery at Guwahati Medical College. Our government hospital will now provide low cost, highly accurate and easily oncology related surgery through Made in India device. Same kind of facilities are coming in Silchar and Dibrugarh.”
He also stated, “Our government hospitals will now offer low-cost, highly precise and least invasive oncological surgical procedures through MADE IN INDIA machinery.

Similar facilities are coming up in Silchar and Dibrugarh.
And to ensure we create manpower to operate high-end medical tech, we are also in the process of beginning nursing colleges in all cancer hospitals that will offer programs in both English, Japanese and foreign languages.”
The Central Government provided ₹15 crore for the purchase of the machine.
