Tension surged in Assam after a suspected militant strike targeted a police camp in Jagun, located in Tinsukia. The incident, now widely referred to as the Assam RPG attack, took place on March 22, just days before the Assembly elections. As a result, security concerns have intensified across the region.

According to early reports, suspected cadres of United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent launched a sudden and coordinated attack on the Assam Police Commando Battalion camp at 10th Mile. Militants fired around four to five rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) from hidden positions. Soon after, they escaped under the cover of darkness.

Injured Personnel Identified

At least four commando personnel were injured in the Assam RPG attack. The injured have been identified as Chitranjan Milli from Jorhat, Robin Ghosh from Chabua in Dibrugarh, Jimbus Marak from Goalpara, and Devashish Bora from Jorhat. All of them are currently undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital. Officials confirmed that one of the injured remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the situation escalated further as locals reported a prolonged exchange of gunfire after the initial blast. This indicates that security forces responded quickly, leading to a fierce encounter with the attackers. The sound of gunshots created panic among nearby residents.

Security Operations Intensified

Soon after the attack, security forces launched large-scale counter-insurgency operations. The entire area has been placed under high alert. Search operations are now underway across sensitive zones, especially along the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border.

Notably, the Jagun–Jairampur–Nampong–Manmao stretch has long been known as a militant corridor. Its proximity to international borders, including routes leading toward Myanmar, makes it strategically sensitive. In the past, similar ambushes have taken place in this belt.

Concerns Ahead of Elections

The timing of the Assam RPG attack has raised serious concerns. With elections approaching, authorities suspect that the strike could be an attempt to disrupt the electoral atmosphere or test the preparedness of security agencies. Such incidents often aim to create fear and instability in key regions.

Security agencies are now focusing on identifying the attackers and tracing their movement. Although ULFA-I involvement is suspected, no official confirmation has been made yet. However, intelligence inputs suggest a possible link to militant networks active in the region.

At present, the situation remains tense. Security presence has increased, and surveillance has been tightened. Investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected as operations continue.
