Assam Police have arrested seven individuals and recovered a cache of arms and communication devices during a late-night anti-militancy operation near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
The joint operation was launched on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, led by Sonitpur and Dhekiajuli police in coordination with CRPF commandos. The raid was conducted in Rowonchandri village near the Thaula Centre in Batashipur, following actionable intelligence about the presence of suspected militants.
During the initial phase of the operation, police apprehended three persons from the area—Gabra Basumatary of Majbat (Udalguri), Rohit Basumatary of Dhekiajuli, and Akheb Basumatary of Arunbari. Authorities recovered two pistols, 16 rounds of ammunition, two walkie-talkies, and five mobile phones from the scene.
Based on confessions obtained during interrogation, law enforcement agencies launched follow-up raids and arrested four more suspects from various locations. Rubul Boro alias Pandek was nabbed from Amingaon in Guwahati, while Anchola Islary was picked up from Runikhata in Chirang. Subsequently, Chang Narzari of Bentol and Philip Basumatary of Runikhata (both from Chirang) were arrested from a secret camp near the Chapai River in Dheraibil, close to the Arunachal hills.
At the hidden camp, police seized two handmade rifles, two khukris (traditional weapons), several mobile phones, torches, and essential food supplies including rice and pulses.
Authorities revealed that the arrested individuals were allegedly planning to form a new armed outfit and were previously involved in criminal activities. The recovered items include firearms, ammunition, communication devices, and other logistical supplies. The search operation is still underway to trace remaining members of the suspected group.
Police have intensified surveillance along the border and surrounding forested areas as part of an ongoing effort to dismantle emerging militant networks.
