The Government of Tripura has imposed a 48-hour curfew under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code of the BNNS, 2023, on August 26. This decision was made after violence erupted in the Jirania area of the West Tripura district following the desecration of a Goddess Kali idol in a local temple.
The incident took place in Katraibari, Ranirbazar under Jirania Sub-Division. In response to escalate the chaos authorities has imposed the curfew. The curfew has imposed from 1:00 am August 26, 2024 from 1:00 am August 28, 2024. In the curfew imposed area of entire Jirania sub-division more 5 people with or without arms has been prohibited.
The desecration led to violent unrest in the Durganagar area, a few kilometers from Agartala, where an angry mob set several houses and nine four-wheelers on fire. Fire brigades quickly sent five fire trucks to put out the flames. Five to seven people suffered minor injuries. The situation was finally brought under control with the help of Tripura State Rifles and CRPF personnel.
Security force has heightened the area to prevent violence.
Late on Sunday, Additional Director General Anurag Dhankar and Minister for Tourism and transport Sushanta Chowdhury visited the unrest area.
