The Second Phase of Lok Sabha 2024 Polls is going and 53 % of Vote has turn out till 3 pm under Silchar constituency, where in Sonai voter turnout 55.68 %. A reports come of vote boycott from Swadhin Bazar GP of the Sonai Legislative Assembly.

A group of 710 voters from the GP’s Group Three area under Sonai, Swadhin Bazar GP have decided to boycott their vote.

Their allegation is that the polling center at their locality where they have usually cast their votes for decades has shifted. They also suspect political motives behind this shift of their polling center.

Resident of Area said the Reason of Vote Boycott

A resident of the village stated “We aren’t boycotting voting; we want to vote. Our request is simple: allow us to cast our votes at Swadhin Bazar High School, where we’ve been voting for years. Alternatively, there are two other schools in our village that could serve as polling centers. However, we’re being compelled to travel 4.5 kilometers away to a sensitive area. This is why we haven’t cast a single vote yet,”.

The new polling center for these voters situated four kilometers away from their area, at 867 Borobauri LP School in Dakhshin Mohanpur Part VII area. Interestingly, residents residing next to the school, along with the entire neighborhood, are voting at Swadhin Bazar High School. Given that locals from this village aren’t voting at 867 Borobauri LP School, the residents question why those living four kilometers away should be required to travel to cast their votes.

The presiding officer of the polling station confirmed that the center set up according to guidelines at 7:00 am, but as of now, not a single vote has cast yet. “We’ve informed the authorities that no voters have shown up to vote. Several officials have visited the center, and everyone is aware of the zero turnout,” the presiding officer added while addressing the press.

Maria Tanim, Circle Officer of Sonai, visited the area

Maria Tanim, Circle Officer of Sonai, visited the location and engaged with the voters. “We appreciate her visit, and we’re ready to cooperate in every way. All we want for the polling center to be brought back to our village because we don’t feel safe traveling to the current center to cast our votes,” stated another local resident.

Another Boycott reports in Silchar the area Consisting of 120 voters have called boycott due to the dire condition of their lane, submerged in foul drain water.
