Violence in Manipur: Houses set on fire and one person killed

Tension erupted in Manipur, following a Meitei man was killed in his farm by unknown miscreants, on June 6. The incident took place near Khasia Punji, in Jiribam district of Manipur. The police said that they suspect that he was killed by militants.
Ahead of the murder angered by the killing, locals set fire an abandoned building, the police said.

The Meitei man, identified as Soibam Saratkumar Singh age 59 years. According to some reports, the incident took place at around 5 pm on June 6 when the man was returning home from his sonโ€™s farm located at Leishabithol. On his way to home, it is suspected that the unknown militants has detained him near Khasi Punji.

When Soibam Saratkumar Singh did not return home the family raised an alarm and immediately reported to Jiribam district police. They promptly launched a search operation and found her dead body near Mulargaon. The dead body had wounds inflicted by a sharp weapon.

The Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation to find the murderer and motive behind the killing.

The wife of the deceased Soibam Romala and her son suspected that the unknown militants would be from Kuki community. But Police did not confirm any identity.

Soibam Romala wife of deceased said, โ€œWhen we found his phone switch off my son went out for search in the area. My son found the two wheeler and the sandal of my husband. Immediately, I reported the incident to Jiribam Police Station, but my husband dead body recovered,โ€

Later, at around 9 pm the angered locals set fire to abandoned houses which belongs to the Kuki community in the nearby area of Jiribam, Manipur.

The protester gathered in front of Police station demanding to return there licensed gun which has taken during election on ground of Polls process which is over.

It has been said that the areas of Laisabithol and Uchathol in Jiribam have become the hotspots of violence. The residents of this area of both Meitei and Kuki communities are fleeing from their homes to escape the situation.

An Eyewitnesses report that several houses have burned down, adding to the chaos and sense of insecurity among residents. Until now, both communities had managed to coexist peacefully despite the broader context of civil unrest.

However, Yesterdays murder has disturbed the peaceful of the area which leads to a war-like situation in Jiribam. The local government urged the officials to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life and protect property. The Local Police are on High alert to control the situation.
