On Tuesday afternoon, three labourers who were working on private property whilst digging a well in Disama, near Diphu City, Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, died.

The incident took place at around 2:30 PM and included the Labourers and Joint Secretary of the Autonomous Council of Karbi Anglong (KAAC) Tenzing Rongpi’s residence.

While digging the well, a tragic accident caused the deaths of the three people.

Their names were Tisong Terang (20), Hari Teron (35), and Longsodar Terang (25).

Preliminary reports say that they were experienced well-diggers who had just started digging what would have been their 100th well.

The incident was reported to the SDRF around 3:25 PM.

Due to remote location, SDRF team faced challenges reaching the site quickly and safely.

By the time the SDRF arrived, all the three workers were already non-responsive.

The SDRF team recovered the bodies from the well and transported them to Diphu Medical College and Hospital.

However, Doctors at DMCH confirmed that the workers were brought dead upon their arrival and later sent the bodies for post mortem.

Authorities suspect the reason of death could be asphyxiation, as deep wells often lacks oxygen and contain hazardous gases.

The incident also raises serious safety risks in manual digging due to the absence of adequate protective measures.
