A woman was saved from suicide attempt in Sadarghat bridge, Silchar on Wednesday afternoon. She was attempting to take her life by jumping into Barak River from old Sadar bridge. An auto driver intervened and saved her.

According to the eyewitness, a woman was climbing the railing of the bridge to jump into River, when the auto driver saw her. The auto driver identified as Amir Uddin Lashkar.

Amir, the auto driver stated, “I was on my way to Rongpur with passenger when I saw her climbing the railing. I immediately rushed to stop her and informed police officials.”

The woman is a residents of Malugram area in Silchar. Woman later revealed to the media that constant domestic abuse by her husband had pushed her to the brink. “He keeps doubting my character and tells me to run away with other men. I can’t take the torture anymore. Even when I go out to bathe, he abuses and beats me,” she said in tears.

Eyewitness Laskar, who saved the woman, shared that he stayed with her until her family arrived. Shockingly, instead of comforting her, her relatives began beating her, leaving Laskar stunned. “She told me she was suffering from family torture. I told her suicide isn’t the solution — there are laws and courts to help. But I couldn’t understand why her own family would react like that,” he said.

The police arrived at the scene and recused the woman. The authorities are currently investigating the matter.

Under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Indian women are legally protected and have the right to seek help from the police, helplines and legal services against the domestic abuse.
