In a shocking case of moral policing, a woman from Kukubari village in the Chencoorie area of Silchar was publicly humiliated by local residents on Tuesday, May 20. The woman was humiliated after being falsely accused of spreading obscene videos online. The incident has led to the arrest of five people, including two women, by Cachar Police.
Woman Paraded With Shoe Garland in Public
According to police sources, the woman was paraded across the village with a garland made of shoes around her neck and her face smeared with lime, a disturbing act of public shaming. This punishment was reportedly decided by a kangaroo court, known locally as a “bichar”, formed by some villagers.
The locals accused the woman and her husband of distributing obscene videos for money.

Private Videos Leaked After Husband Lost Phone
In her complaint, the victim denied all allegations. She explained that she frequently made video calls with her husband, who is currently working in Bangalore. Some of those calls were private and intimate and her husband had recorded them on his phone.
During a recent visit home, the husband reportedly lost his phone during a train journey. Soon after, private videos from the phone started surfacing online.
“Some miscreants must have found the phone and leaked the videos,” the woman said.
Silchar: Private Video Leak Circulated on WhatsApp and Social Media
After the videos went viral on local WhatsApp groups and social media, some villagers accused the couple of running an online porn business and decided to take matters into their own hands.
Several local women organized the bichar and led the mob in punishing the woman publicly.
Police Intervene, 5 People Arrested
The entire act of humiliation was recorded on video and widely circulated online. After receiving a complaint, the National Highway Outpost and Cachar Police intervened. Acting swiftly, they arrested five villagers on Tuesday:
- Kishan Das (26)
- Ranjit Das (26)
- Kripesh Das (22)
- Sailabala Das (55)
- Sadhona Das (35)
All five are residents of Kukubari and were produced before the district court on Wednesday, May 21.
Over 50 People Involved – Police Continue Investigation
Police have confirmed that over 50 people were involved in this moral policing incident. Furtehr investigation is going on to find the rest of the and arrest the others based on video footage and eyewitness accounts.
Rise in Moral Policing in Silchar
This is not the only recent case of mob-led justice in the region. In another incident from Second Link Road, a man accused of mobile phone theft was tied to a cehicle, beaten and had his head shaved by a group of locals. Police have arrested three people in connection with that case as well.
