A 22 years old pregnant woman died alleged due to medical negligence at newly opened Central Hospital in Katigorah, Cachar on July 11, 2025. The incident has sparked public outrage and chaos in the hospital, where police intervene with a mild lathi charge and detain four individuals, among them two are doctor.
According to reports, the woman named Ramjana Begum, resident of Kalain, admitted to the Central Hospital on Friday morning by her husband, Ali Haidar. She underwent a caesarean section around noon and delivered a baby boy. While the initial surgery appeared successful, her condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly afterward. And she was sifter to ICU.
The victim’s family accused the hospital of keeping them in the dark about her condition. Her father-in-law expressed anger over the false assurances they received about experienced doctors being available. “We were told the hospital provided better service than those in Silchar. But after the operation, we learned there were no qualified doctors present,” he said.
Despite repeated requests for updates, the hospital staff allegedly vague responses, claiming she was on oxygen support. It wasn’t until later that they were told she was on a ventilator—news that raised suspicions among the family. They soon realized Ramjana may have already passed away and accused the hospital of hiding the truth.
Public Protest Outside the hospital in Katigorah, Cachar

After the news of the incident spread hundred of people gather outside the hospital, and hold a protest. Tensions escalated when a relative of the deceased reportedly attacked a hospital staff member. Police arrived around 4:45 PM to control the situation, and additional forces from Kalain, Gumrah, and Silchar were deployed.
Even Katigorah Circle Officer Dr. Robert Tolar and Deputy Superintendent of Police reached the scene to managed the situation.
Four Individual arrested
- Dr. G.D. Dewri (also associated with Katigorah Model Hospital)
- Dr. Tasmin Sumaiya Laskar
- Ashraful Islam (lab technician)
- One unidentified staff member
One of the relatives of the victim said that this is third such cases in one month in this newly opened hospital.
FIR Filed against the doctors and Hospital Management Absconding
An FIR has been lodged by Ramjana’s husband against multiple individuals, including Central Hospital’s in-charge Dr. Saptarshi Chakraborty, Ramesh Paul, and Animesh Das. All named individuals are currently absconding.
The victim’s body has been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Further investigation is going on. The locals of the area has demanded immediate closure of the hospital.
