A large protest staged in Nilambazar, Sribhumi on April 7, in demand of cancellation of Waqf Amendment Act. More than 1000 of people gathered and staged the protest around the Nilambazar Circle Office Premises.
The protest was organized by Kaibarta Muslim Organisation. They raised slogans and showed their anger against the new changes in the law.
Tension escalates in the protest area when protestors attempts to block the National High way No. 6 which lead to brief clashes among the protestors and police officials. Police and paramilitary teams quickly arrived to bring the situation under control.
Although the protest was mostly peaceful, the brief clashes with police officials caused some disruption to traffic. Officials have said that everything is now calm and no serious injuries or arrests were reported.
Leaders of the Kaibarta Muslim Organization said they will continue their protest until the amendment is withdrawn.
