The Assam government has stepped up its response with a major Assam flood relief package. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Rs 112 crore as the first phase of interim assistance. This move aims to support thousands of families affected by the recent floods.
Each eligible household will receive Rs 15,000. Initially, over 60,000 families across four districts will benefit. However, the number may rise to 75,000 as assessments continue.
Sivasagar will see the highest coverage, with more than 35,000 families included. Charaideo follows with over 19,000 beneficiaries. Meanwhile, Jorhat and Golaghat will also receive support for affected households.
More Support and Ongoing Assessment
In addition, the government has announced extra help for displaced families. Those in Sivasagar and Charaideo who cannot return home by August 9 will get another Rs 10,000. This support will begin from August 10.
The aim is clear. Authorities want to assist families still living in relief camps or temporary shelters. Floods have damaged homes, farmland, and infrastructure. Therefore, quick financial help is crucial.
At the same time, officials will start a detailed ground assessment from August 10. This process will cover loss of property, crops, and lives. Based on findings, further compensation will be released as per government norms.
Apart from this, the state has also released its share under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. This initiative promotes rooftop solar systems and helps reduce electricity costs.
Overall, the Assam flood relief effort shows a stronger push towards recovery. Still, many challenges remain. Residents continue to hope for faster rehabilitation and long-term solutions.
