Northeast India’s First Bengali daily Newspaper ‘Dainik Prantojyoti’ on October 25 stop its publication and closed after 63 years, marking the end of an era in regional journalism.
Dainik Prantojyoti founded in the year of 1961 and based in Silchar. The newspaper served and published vital information for the local community.

It covered the news and information of wide range, including local, national and international news, which helped the readers to stay informed about the current events. The newspaper was more than just a bunch of stories; it was a part of everyday life, connecting people through shared news and conversations.

The closure of Dainik Prantojyoti highlights the ongoing transition from traditional newspapers to digital media, as the publication faced challenges in generating sufficient revenue to sustain its operations.

Dainik Prantojyoti published a noticed where they stated, “Due to financial constrains and loss in the business of publication I am unable to continue with the publication and sale of newspaper under the name and style Prantajyoti Dainik. So, the establishment of Prantajyoti Dainik is shut down With effect from 25-10-2024.”

Speaking to media veteran journalist Pranabananda Das from Silchar said, “The government is not willing to support the print media industry. Their advertisement policy favours large media houses, while smaller ones with limited resources are often overlooked. Additionally, small media outlets may struggle to get advertisements if they don’t align with the government’s views. This creates a serious crisis for them. In the Northeast, there are few opportunities for corporate advertising, so many media houses depend on government ads for revenue. These challenges are putting the print media in a tough situation”, India Today NE reported.
