Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced 12.7 lakh Metric Ton urea plant in Namrup today during Union Budget session 2025.
This was a long-standing demand of the people of Assam. The decision is a part of a plan to boost farming and support the local economy.
Nirmala Sitharaman announcement comes after talks between Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and JP Nadda about expanding the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Ltd (BVFCL) in Namrup.
As part of a โน500 crore investment, two new Nano Urea plants will be set up to upgrade existing facilities and increase production.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, โ#UnionBudget2025 has announced a 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Namrup, a long standing demand of the people of Assam. After the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad , this urea facility will be a game changer for the entire North East. It will not only help us achieve self sufficiency in fertilizer availability but also better channelise our natural gas resources. On behalf of the people of Assam my heartfelt gratitude to Honโble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiJi and Honโble Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the project’s potential to transform agriculture in Assam, generate jobs, and boost local economic opportunities, especially for young people. This expansion aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to strengthen industries in Northeast India.
Beyond industrial growth, the project will also improve social infrastructure. Plans include building a community hall and sports facilities for children, enhancing the quality of life in the Namrup region.
