Myanmar Earthquake: Death toll rises to 1000, injured 2000

On March 28, massive earthquake struck Myanmar and parts of Thailand which left massive destruction and people died and injured. Over 1000 people died and 2000 people injured in Myanmar, the military junta said on Saturday.

In Thailand, at least 6 people died, where a high under construction building collapse in Bangkok on Friday, earthquake. Bangkok city authorities reported six deaths, 26 injuries, and 47 missing persons, mostly from a construction site near the popular Chatuchak market.

7.7 magnitude of earthquake hits Myanmar at midday, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar ’s second-largest city. After this earthquake few minutes later 7.0 magnitude of earthquake occured within 12 minutes about 90 Km SW of the mainshock. Total 6 aftershocks of different magnitude range M: 4.0 to M: 7.0 were.

The junta’s information team reported that 1,002 people died and 2,376 were injured in Friday’s 7.7-magnitude earthquake. Bangkok has declared emergency.

India Sent Relief Item at Myanmar Earthquake destruction area

In response to the earthquake India sent 15 tonnes of relief material aid in affected areas of Myanmar reported by ANI. This relief aid was sent by an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J aircraft from Air Force Station Hindon. The relief item includes tents, blankets, water purifiers, ready-to-eat meals, solar lamps, generator sets, important medicines like paracetamol, syringes, antibiotics, syringes, bandages, hygiene kits, and gloves.

India was among the first to offer aid in Myanmar. PM Narendra Modi expressed concerns and readiness to assist.

He stated, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday, causing massive destruction in Myanmar and shaking parts of neighboring Thailand. The quake caused buildings to collapse, roads to buckle, and bridges to crumble. A dam also burst due to the impact. In Thailand, the tremors were felt in the greater Bangkok area, home to around 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise buildings.

A 33-story building under construction by a Chinese firm for the Thai government wobbled before collapsing into a massive cloud of dust. Panicked people screamed and fled the scene. Mandalay suffered extensive damage, with multiple buildings reduced to piles of rubble and twisted metal. In Sagaing, the Ava Bridge, a nearly 100-year-old structure spanning the Irrawaddy River, collapsed into the rushing waters below.
