Morigaon district Jail, two wardens Tapan Bhuyan and Anup Malakar have been suspended after due to recent security breach, which allows prisoner escape.
The suspension came after an investigative report from the Inspector General (IG) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the jail, which showed major failures in duty on the night of the incident.
On October 11 in the early hours, during Durga Puja festivals, five prisoners manage to escape from the jail barracks.
Using blankets and bed sheets, the prisoners climbed over the 20-foot prison walls after removing the iron bars. One of the escapees, Abdul Rashid, was later found dead in a pond in Lahorighat on October 14. Authorities are investigating whether his death was accidental or if something suspicious happened.
The remaining escape prisoner are Saifuddin, Jiarul Islam, Nur Islam, and Mafidul, who are still in run. Police are searching them to arrest.
Following the jailbreak, quick disciplinary actions were taken. On that day, October 11, Morigaon District Jail Jailer Prasanta Saikia was suspended and Assistant Jailer Nabadeep Lekharu transferred to Nagaon Special Jail. Jail Superintendent Manas Das was also reassigned to Hamren Jail.
In light of the incident, the District Commissioner of Morigaon has ordered a magisterial inquiry. Additional District Magistrate Pallavi Kachary has appointed to lead the investigation and also expected to submit her findings soon, which will help determine next steps to take and improve security at the facility.
