In a major step, the Meghalaya government has given official status to Khasi and Garo. This decision marks a turning point for Meghalaya Languages and cultural identity in the state.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma called the move “historic.” The state cabinet approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026 on Thursday. With this, Khasi and Garo will now join English as official languages.

Until now, English handled all government work. However, this new move changes that. It opens the door for local languages to enter administration and public communication.

Moreover, the decision reflects long-standing demands. Khasi and Garo are spoken by the state’s largest tribal communities. Leaders have also pushed for their inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This step may strengthen that demand further.

What Changes for Governance and Students

With the new status, Khasi and Garo can now be used in official communication. Over time, the government will update existing laws. This includes changes to the Meghalaya State Legislature Act of 1980.

As a result, lawmakers may soon speak in Khasi and Garo during Assembly sessions. This will happen alongside English. However, the shift will not be immediate. Authorities will first set clear rules for usage.

At the same time, English will continue as a common link. It will help maintain smooth communication across departments. So, there will be a balanced approach.

Importantly, this move may also impact students. The government plans to allow the use of Meghalaya Languages in certain exams in the future. This could make education more accessible for many.

In conclusion, the decision is more than symbolic. It gives recognition to local identity. It also strengthens the case for national-level inclusion. While implementation will take time, the direction is clear. Meghalaya is embracing its linguistic roots while keeping English as a bridge.
