A massive protest erupts by All Assam Moran Student Union’s in the area of Makum demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Moran, Motok, and six other ethnic groups in Assam.
The Assam protest was organized in response to Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oramโs recent comments, which protesters felt showed a lack of commitment to their cause.
Protestor blocked National Highway 37 in Makum and expressed anger at the central governmentโs failure to address their demand for ST status, which has been a long-standing issue for the community.
The protesters burnt effigies of PM Narendra Modi, Minister Jual Oram, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Tensions escalated as running battles between the police and anti-riot demonstrators caused injuries.
Other groups like the Moran Students’ Union argue that the Moran and Motok communities have huge cultural and historical basis to be granted ST status. Therefore, the community feels that this has been a long time in coming and delay made them feel neglected and discriminated upon, all of which just sparked this wave of protests going on presently.
