A massive landslide hit Rupnagar area of Guwahati late Thursday night at around 11:30 pm. This landslide causes massive destruction and prompting rescue operation. A massive 30-foot-high boulder rolled down a hillside, crashing directly into two houses with tremendous force.
According to report, one individual feared trapped in the debris. The trapped individual, identified as 60-year-old Maneswar Rajbongshi. Eyewitnesses report that Rajbongshi had stepped out of his home after hearing a strange sound behind his house when the landslide struck. Moments later, he was buried under a torrent of mud, rock and debris.
Emergency services, including State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Assam Police and Fire officials arrived immediately after getting about the incident. Despite their efforts, no trace of Rajbongshi has been found even six hours after the disaster occurred.
Another house nearby was also completely destroyed in the landslide, though no injuries were reported from that location. The affected families have been evacuated, and authorities are on high alert due to the risk of further landslides triggered by ongoing monsoon rains.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the increasing frequency of landslides in Guwahati’s hillside neighborhoods, especially during the monsoon season. Experts blame unregulated construction and deforestation for the weakening of hill slopes, making them vulnerable to collapse.
Family members of the missing individual are anxiously waiting as the search continues. Local officials have urged residents in vulnerable zones to remain alert and cooperate with authorities in case of evacuation advisories.
