The Dhubri district administration on Tuesday, carried out a massive eviction drive in Bilasipara under Assam’s Dhubri district. It has claimed to be the largest eviction drive.
The eviction drive carried out around 55 km from Dhubri town, in areas like Santoshpur, Charuabakhra, and Chirakuta Part 1 and 2 clearing approximately 3,500 bighas of government land for Adani projects. According to reports, at around 2000 families, comprising of nearly 20,000 people have been homeless.
The eviction drive is part of the Assam government’s broader initiative to allocate land to the Adani Group for setting up a thermal power project under the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL).

In response to the displacement, government officials stated that each affected family would be provided one-time financial assistance of ₹50,000. Additionally, landless families considered for rehabilitation at Boyjer-Alga, under the jurisdiction of the Athani Revenue Circle Officer.
Meanwhile, tension escalates after eviction drive took place at the sites, as many locals blocked road and staged protests. The situation quickly grew volatile, prompting a swift intervention by law enforcement. Superintendent of Police Leena Doley reached the spot and took direct control of the situation, working to restore calm amid mounting resistance.
In related to the incident, Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi attempt to visit the sites, to speak with the affected people, who was stopped by police. Later detained at Chapar Police Station.
According to sources, the situation became tense after Akhil Gogoi arrived at the eviction site. Most families were ready to move peacefully, but a section of people started creating chaos. Amid the chaos, two JCB machines damaged and police allegedly used lathi charge to control the crowd, resulting in injuries to several people.
Despite promises from the administration, protests continued throughout the day as displaced families demanded proper rehabilitation and fair compensation.
