Manipur Violence: Five houses burnt, two people died and 10 other injured

Manipur Violence: Suspected militants burnt at least five abandoned houses at a village in Imphal West district of Manipur before they chased away by security forces, police said on Monday.

A senior officer said, the militants started firing from the top of the hills sown to the low lying areas of Koutruk and nearby Kadangband on Sunday afternoon. They managed to reach the outskirts of the village.

The police officer told to media about Manipur Violence, “Five abandoned houses were burnt by the militants. The residents had fled their homes after the gun and bomb attack that began around 2.30 pm on Sunday. The militants pushed back by security forces on Sunday night.”

In this attack two person died including woman and 10 other injured on September 1, 2024.
The attack by suspected militants has caused panic among the residents, forcing the woman and children to flee from the area to the safer place.

The police also claimed that rocket-propelled grenades and drones used in the attack. An official statement about the attack said, โ€œIn an unprecedented attack in Koutruk, Imphal West, alleged militants have deployed numerous RPGs using high-tech drones. While drone bombs have commonly used in general warfare, this recent deployment of drones to deploy explosives against security forces and civilians marks a significant escalation.โ€

The statement said that highly trained professionals, possibly with technical skills and support, may be involved as without professional training none can do this attack.

“Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation, and the police are ready to handle any emergencies,” it added.

The state government urged people to remain calm.

“Search operations are ongoing to remove any hostile elements,” the statement concluded.

District Magistrate of Imphal West issued a restriction order in Manipur because of violence

The District Magistrate of Imphal West, Th. Kirankumar, issued a restriction order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, starting September 1, 2024, due to ongoing law and order issues. The order limits people from moving outside their homes. However, a temporary relaxation in the curfew has been announced for September 2, 2024, from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, so residents can buy essential items. This relaxation does not allow gatherings, protests, or rallies without prior approval. Essential services, like healthcare, electricity, media, and airport operations, are exempt from the curfew.
