Barpeta Police have arrested a man for allegedly extorting money by impersonating an official from the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Department.

The accused, identified as Anup Kumar Das, a resident of Dibrugarh, reportedly demanded ₹1 lakh from Mohammad Akram of Chenga in Barpeta district, claiming that the money was being collected on behalf of the CM’s Vigilance. According to police sources, Das had been staying at his in-law’s house in Mirza when he made the extortion attempt.

Authorities have launched an in-depth investigation to determine whether more individuals are involved in the racket or if similar fraudulent activities have taken place in other districts.

Earlier on September 8, the Crime Branch arrested two individuals allegedly linked to a large-scale cyber fraud operation. The accused, Dipankar Das of Nagarbera and Ranjit Kashyap alias Ranjit Tayung, were apprehended from the Garchuk area following a surveillance-driven operation.

Officials revealed that the duo had been tricking victims with fake loan offers, later opening multiple bank accounts under false identities to launder the defrauded money. In one case, they allegedly cheated a victim of ₹78 lakh through the scam.
