In a chilling reminder of the dangers superstitions pose. On October 29, night locals in Uttar Krishnapur, Cachar, thwarted an attempt by a self-proclaimed tantrik to exhume a body for black magic rituals. The suspect, identified as Azib Uddin from Shildubi, caught red-handed at the cemetery by residents who restrained him and turned him over to the police.
The incident came to light when Badrul Ahmed Laskarโs younger brother, passing by the cemetery where their father Fakhruddin Laskar had recently laid to rest, spotted two men digging up his fatherโs grave. Shocked and alarmed, he called for help, and nearby residents quickly arrived to confront the individuals. While one suspect fled, locals managed to detain Azib Uddin. During questioning, Uddin confessed that they intended to use the body for black magic purposes and identified his escaped accomplice as Saddam Fakir, a cousin of the Laskar family.
According to Badrul, โMy younger brother saw one man digging up our father’s grave. When he yelled at him and called some of our locals, 10 to 15 people gathered and caught him red-handed. In the meantime, another of his accomplices, Saddam Fakir who happens to my cousin managed to escape. I also reached there to ask why the man was doing so and what were his intentions. When asked he said, it was Saddam Fakir’s idea as he lived near the graveyard.โ
Outraged by the act, residents delivered a beating to the tantrik before handing him over to the police at Silchar Rangirkhari station, Cachar where he now faces formal charges. Locals claim this isnโt the first such occurrence, recalling a similar incident last year when a womanโs remains were violated at the same cemetery.
The family, and the community at large, demand strict action against those involved, hoping to prevent further incidents rooted in superstition and fear.
