Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna. Janmashtami is celebrated every year in August or September, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu lunar calendar.

Puja Rituals

  • Wake up early morning and take a holy bath.
  • Observe a day-long fast, which can be either Nirjala (without water) or Phalahar (consuming only fruits and milk). The fast is maintained until midnight, the believed time of Krishnaโ€™s birth.
  • Nishita Kaal (midnight) is the most auspicious time for Janmashtami puja as it is believed to be the exact time of Krishna’s birth. At midnight, devotees perform special rituals, sing devotional songs (bhajans), and chant mantras like the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.
  • A small idol of baby Krishna (Bal Gopal) or laddu Gopal is bathed with plain water, Gangajal and panchamrit which mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges). This ritual is known as Abhishekam and symbolizes purity and devotion.
  • Adorn the idol of Gopal with new beautiful dresses, Mukut, Mor Pank and flute.
  • Devotees prepare and offer various dishes to Lord Krishna, known as bhog. These often include his favorite foods like Makhan Mishri (butter with sugar), Panakam (a sweet drink), fruits, and sweets like Peda and Ladoo.
  • Offer him Tulsi Patra.
  • Many devotees also offer him 21, 31 and 56 Bhog to appease Lord Krishna.

The name of Lord Krishna is itself a powerful mantra, and one can chant it. Additionally, the “Hare Krishna” maha-mantra can be recited. For those seeking to accept Krishna as their guru, reading the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is recommended.
