India’s New Traffic Rules: Fines Up to ₹25,000 & Jail Time!

To provide road safety, India Government has announced new traffic rules with fines increasing more than 10 times who the break rule. The new rule has implemented from 1st March, 2025.

From now you need to follow all the traffic rules or need to pay fines which increased more than 10 times. So, to break traffic rules need to think 10 times.

Government has decided to increased the penalties to prevent traffic violations and promote stricter road discipline in India.

The new Penalties of breaking Traffic Rules are:-

1.Drunken Driving: The new Penalties for Drunken Driving is to give fine of Rs 10,000 and 6-month jail for first term violation. Second time violation will increase to Rs 15,000 with 2 years jail. The previous penalties were ranging between Rs 1000 – Rs 1500 which has now increased 10 times more.

2. Riding without Helmet: The fine of riding without helmet has increased to Rs 1000, previously it was Rs 100. Within new penalties License will be cancelled for three months with fine.

3. Not wearing seat Belt: If you don’t wear Seat Belt from now you have to pay Rs 1,000 penalties, which previously was Rs 100.

    4. Mobile Phone using while driving: If you have the habit of using mobile phone or taking calls while driving than correct your habits. The penalties is high for breaking this rule. With new Penalties the driver have to pay Rs 5000 as fine while using phone during drive. The precious fine was Rs. 500.

    5. Driving without License: Driving without license or valid license have to pay Rs 5000 fine. Previously it was Rs 500. However, digital license is also accepted.

    6. Driving without Valid Insurance: If you caught without valid insurance you have to pay Rs 2000 penalties with 3 month jail. If it repeated Rs 4000 fine.

    7.Trippel Riding on Two-Wheelers: The fine for carrying three riders on a bike has increased to ₹1,000, previously it was Rs 100.

    8. Driving without Valid pollution certificate: If you drive without valid pollution certificate you have to pay Rs 10,000 and possible 6 month jail and community services.

    9. Over speeding: Reckless driving or racing at public road will have to give fine of Rs 5000.

    10.Blocking Emergency Service: Emergency Services like Ambulance, Firefighters need to give pass. If you block them then it will cost Rs 10,000. Previous fine was Rs 1000.

    11.Overload vehicles: The fine for overloading vehicles has jumped from Rs 2000 to Rs, 20,000.

    12. Jumping Traffic Signals: Jumping a red light now costs ₹5,000, up from the previous ₹500.

    13. Juvenile Offences: If a juvenile (under 18 years minors) commits a traffic offence, the penalty is now much stricter. The fine has increased from ₹2,500 to ₹25,000, along with three years in jail. The vehicle’s registration will be canceled for a year, and the offender cannot get a driving license until they turn 25.

      Government Aims of higher fines

      India Government has higher the fines to reduce reckless driving, ensure safety of public and to control the accident. Adding jail time and community service for some violations shows how serious traffic offences are.

      A government spoke person stated, “The rise in traffic fines is a much-needed step to enforce stricter discipline among drivers. Every year, thousands of lives are lost due to road accidents caused by negligence. With these new penalties, we hope to bring significant improvement in road safety.”
