An IIT Kharagpur student found hanging in his hostel under the campus on Sunday morning. The student identified as Shaon Malik (21-year-old) a third-year student of electrical engineering and hailed from Kasba in Kolkata.
His dead body was discovered when his parents visit in hostel to meet him in the weekend of holiday. He used to stay at the Azad Hall hostel. When the parents did not find any respond by knocking the door, and repeated calls, they forcefully entered the room and found him hanging, a police officer stated.
“While the incident initially appeared to be a case of suicide, District Police Superintendent Dhritiman Sarkar, who promptly arrived at the scene, has ordered an investigation. Sniffer dogs deployed on the campus, and the body sent to the sub-divisional hospital for a postmortem,” the official stated.
“Authorities are questioning students who were acquainted with the deceased. Forensic test conducted on food samples consumed by the student on Saturday night, and his mobile phone has seized for further examination,” he added.
IIT Kharagpur Director Amit Patra told the media on Sunday night that the studentโs death has left everyone shocked.
โHe was an excellent student and a kind person, friendly with everyone. The cause of his tragic death needs to investigated, and only the police can do that. We will fully cooperate with them,โ Patra said.
Police have sent the student body for postmortem examination.
