On Monday, protest erupted at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati after a student died by suicide in the hostel room on September 9 morning, at Brahmaputra Hostel. The dean of Academic Affairs resigned from his position.
This resignation come after the 21 years old Bimlesh Kumar, a third year B.Tech Computer student was found dead. He was from Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that he died by suicide. Police is investigating the matter. His body has sent for postmortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Furthermore, the student also demanded that Assistant Professor Rajkumar Thummer to resign from his position.
According to reports, the professor has been accused of misconduct, misuse of authority, and violating the institution’s code of conduct.
In response to the protest, IIT Guwahati has introduced several measures to address student welfare concerns.
The administration initiate investigation in collaboration with local police for the case. Extended counseling services are now available belond regular hours and the introduction of QR codes on hostel doors linking to mental health resources.
Additionally, the Peer Mentorship Program and community activities are being emphasized to foster a supportive environment for students.
