A complaint has filed against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for the hatred speech against Bengali and Muslim Communities during his Lok Sabha Election campaign in Jharkhand. The Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) has filed a written petition to the Cachar Superintendent of Police and the Director General of Police (DGP) seeking an immediate investigation into inflammatory comments made by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a recent election campaign in Jharkhand.

In his comment The Chief Minister referred to Bengali speakers in Assam as Bangladeshis, which the BDYF fears could lead to widespread harassment and oppression of Bengalis across India.

Complaint filed by BDYF Chief convener

The BDYF chief convener Kalparnad Gupta criticized the Chief Minister’s assertion that 40% of Assam’s citizens and MLAs are illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, that 1.25 crore of Bangladeshis have “infiltrated” into Assam in the past 40 years and that that 40 MLAs in Assam and other persons holding good positions are “also Bangladeshi immigrants.

Kalparnad Gupta also claims that Sarma encouraged the people of Jharkhand to act violently against those suspected of being Bangladeshi immigrants, causing fear among Bengalis and Muslims.

He also stated in his complaint that Mr. Sarma’s provocative and false statements maliciously encouraged the people of Jharkhand and other states to assault Bengalis and Muslims under false accusations of being Bangladeshis.

Gupta referenced the process of updating the 1951 National Register of Citizens (NRC) to identify illegal immigrants in Assam. He noted that in the final NRC published on August 31, 2019, only 19 lakh applicants, which accounts for less than 6% of the total, excluded on suspicion of being foreigners, and the appeal stage is still pending. The actual number of illegal immigrants will only be known after the appeal process is complete.

Gupta questioned how Mr. Sarma, as the Chief Minister of Assam, could provoke people to assault others based on allegations of being Bangladeshi immigrants. He expressed concerns that Bengalis and Muslims in Assam are feeling increasingly insecure while traveling outside the state. Gupta has called for the registration of an FIR against Mr. Sarma. He has said all this in his social media account of Facebook.

Another complaint files against Himanta Biswa Sarma

Similarly, Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Ripun Bora lodged a complaint with the Chief Election Commissioner of India, accusing Sarma of violating the model code of conduct by making hate speeches against the Muslim community. Bora’s complaint highlights Sarma’s remarks that allegedly incite the Hindu community against Muslims and make inflammatory statements about the Mughal era and the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi.

In response to the allegations, Sarma defended his statements by stressing the need to tackle illegal immigration to protect the interests of the indigenous people. However, critics argue that his remarks create division and prejudice, increasing societal tensions.
