Dispur Police Arrested an ATM fraud who had been preying on elderly and less-educated individuals by deceitfully swapping their ATM cards across the Guwahati.
The accused, identified as Ramez Ali (35), was apprehended near the SBI ATM booth at APSC Chariali in Khanapara following a tip-off.
He was caught red-handed with 16 ATM cards belonging to different people. Authorities also found his voter ID, PAN card, Aadhaar card, and three mobile phones in his possession at the time of the arrest. Ali was travelling in a Honda Civic (AS01AL4600).
During interrogation, Ali confessed to operating from a rented house in Bagharbari, under the jurisdiction of Satgaon Police Station. A subsequent raid on the premises led to significant recoveries, including:
- ₹39,000 in cash
- Gold ornaments (chains, rings, earrings)
- Four cheque books in his name
- Four signed cheques belonging to another individual, Faruk Ahmed
- Four additional mobile phones
The police suspect that Ramez Ali is part of a larger ATM fraud network operating in the city. Currently, he remains in police custody, and a deeper investigation is underway to uncover the extent of his criminal activities.
This arrest is a warning to the public to remain cautious while using ATM booths, especially when approached by strangers offering unsolicited help.
