Central Government of India has officially notified Cashless treatment for the Road accident victims nationwide. The move has taken to enhance emergency care and reduce fatalities from road accidents.
Under this scheme each of the Road accident victims will get up to Rs 1.5 Lakh medical treatment free.
The Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025, came into effect on May 5, 2025, as per a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
According to the notification, “Any person being a victim of a road accident arising out of the use of a motor vehicle, occurring on any road, shall be entitled to cashless treatment in accordance with the provisions of this scheme.”
The National Health Authority (NHA) has appointed as the implementing agency, working in coordination with police, hospitals, State Health Agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
The notification added, “The victim shall be entitled to cashless treatment at any designated hospital for an amount up to one lakh fifty thousand rupees per victim for a maximum period of seven days from the date of such accident.”
Key Features of the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme:
- Victims, entitled to cashless treatment at any designated hospital.
- Coverage of up to ₹1.5 lakh per person. Valid for a maximum of seven days from the date of the accident.
- Non-designated hospitals may provide initial stabilisation treatment only, as per the guidelines.
To ensure effective execution, each State Road Safety Council will act as the nodal agency for the scheme’s implementation in their respective states or union territories. These councils will be responsible for:
- Coordinating with the NHA
- Onboarding of designated hospitals through the centralised portal
- Overseeing victim treatment, payment processes and related matters
Additionally, the central government will establish a Steering Committee of 11 member to monitor the scheme’s implementation and ensure smooth coordination across agencies.
The scheme follows a successful pilot programme launched on March 14, 2024, by MoRTH. That aimed at providing timely, cashless treatment to road accident victims and reducing preventable deaths due to delayed medical care.
