A sudden eviction near Cotton University at late night on March 13, has sparked strong protest from affected vendors. It has been reported that the eviction took place without prior notice, which sparks the outrage.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out a sudden eviction drive on Lakshminath Bezbaruah Road near Cotton University late at night, removing several fast-food stalls set up on the footpath. An Eyewitnesses reported that the municipal workers swiftly cleared the area, the helpless vendors looked on.

The eviction has faced strong criticism, with small business owners accusing the authorities of supporting big businesses while neglecting local vendors. Protesters also criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying such actions go against the state’s efforts to promote self-reliance through programs like Advantage Assam and Atmanirbhar Assam.
The affected vendors are now urging officials to step in, address their concerns, and provide them with alternative spaces to run their businesses.
