Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav. Ganesh Chaturthi is the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, who is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Every Year Ganesh Utsav falls in the month of August or September.

This year Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 7, 2024. The Chaturthi Tithi will begin at 3.01 pm on September 6 and ends at 5.37 pm on September 7. The festival is celebrated for 10 days. It is observed with great enthusiasm, especially in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, and Gujarat.

The Subh Muhuurat of Ganesh Chaturthi will start from 11:03 AM to 01:34 PM on September 7, 2024.

Ganesh Utsav celebrated every year for 10 days. This year Ganesh Chaturthi will begin on September 7 and Ganesh Visarjan will took place September 17, 2024.

Morning Muhurat – 9:11 am to 1:47 pm
Afternoon Muhurat – 3:19 pm to 4:51 pm
Evening Muhurat – 7:51 pm to 9:19 pm
Night Muhurat – 10:47 pm to 3:12 am, September 18

Ganesh Chaturthi Ritual

  • Preparation: Clean the space, place the Ganesha idol on a red or yellow cloth, and gather puja items like flowers, fruits, sweets, incense, and lamps.
  • After that Install the Ganesh idol on a clean Ashan, preferably draped with a red or yellow cloth.
  • Sprinkle some holy water (usually from the Ganges) or regular water mixed with turmeric to purify the space.
  • Invocation (Pran Pratishtha): Invite Lord Ganesha into the idol by chanting mantras like “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” and offer flowers and durva grass.
  • Offerings (Shodashopachara): Perform the 16 traditional offerings including water, clothes, sandalwood paste, incense, lamps, and food (especially modak).
  • Mantras & Prayers: Chant Ganesh mantras or stotras like Ganesh Atharvashirsha and perform the aarti.
  • Prasad: Offer sweets and fruits as bhog, after puja distribute prasad to family and guests
  • Visarjan (Immersion): On the last day, immerse the idol in water, symbolizing Ganesha’s return to his divine abode.

Bhog for Ganpati

In the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi people can offer bhog of modak, laddu, pooran poli, kheer, Karanji and supari. Modak is the favorite sweets of Lord Ganesha. Modak, is a sweet dumpling made from rice flour, wheat flour, or maida, and filled with coconut, jaggery, and cardamom. It is either steamed (called ukadiche modak) or fried.

How to prepare Modak

Ingredients:
For dough: 1 cup rice flour, 1 cup water, 1 tsp ghee, pinch of salt
For filling: 1 cup grated coconut, 3/4 cup jaggery, 1/2 tsp cardamom powder, 1 tbsp ghee
Instructions:
Make the Filling: Heat ghee, add coconut and jaggery, cook until jaggery melts. Add cardamom powder. Let cool.
Prepare Dough: Boil water with salt and ghee. Add rice flour, stir until smooth. Knead into soft dough.
Shape Modak: Take dough, flatten into a disc, add filling, and pinch edges to form a modak.
Steam: Steam the modaks for 10-12 minutes.
Now serve the Modak to Lord Ganesha in the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi
