Five Assam Police constables suspended over their alleged involvement in a nexus with areca nut smugglers in the Cachar district. The suspension comes as a result of their suspected complicity in allowing the passage of smuggled areca nuts through the Digorkhal check-post.

Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta took swift action by suspending the five constables who were posted at the Digorkhal check-post. These officers were also part of the Gumrah Police Investigation Centre located along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border.
According to district police sources, the implicated police personnel facilitated the passage of a truck loaded with areca nuts through the toll gate of Shibnagar. The truck, owned by two alleged smugglers. The truck later intercepted near the Meghalaya border by the Officer-in-Charge of the Gumrah Police Station.
Arrests and Police Firing:
Following the interception, the driver of the truck was arrested, leading the police to the alleged smugglers. Both individuals were arrested on Saturday night. Among them one sustaining injuries in police firing while attempting to flee from custody.

Subsequent interrogation of the arrested smugglers revealed the complicity of the police personnel in allowing the truck to pass through the checkpoint. The five constables arrested on Saturday night and brought to the Silchar Police Station.
Bribery Allegations:
During the investigation, police seized Rs 1.48 lakh from the arrested constables, allegedly given to them as a bribe. This discovery further fueled suspicions of corruption and collusion within the police force.
Injuries and Medical Treatment:
Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen informed the media that one police constable suffered serious injuries during the operation to apprehend the smugglers. The injured constable is currently undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
