In a significant boost to the impending Dolu Greenfield Airport project in Assam’s Cachar district, a public hearing held by the Pollution Control Board on Monday drew overwhelming support from local individuals and groups. The hearing, held near Bon Durga Mandir in Dolu, sought public comment on the proposed airport’s environmental and socioeconomic issues.
Mridul Yadav, District Commissioner of Cachar, said that roughly 95% of the 151 memoranda filed during the hearing supported the project, with only 5% opposing it. The criticisms expressed primarily concerned the rehabilitation of impacted people, environmental damage, job creation, and execution method.
Around 800 people attended the public hearing, where 32 speakers representing more than 50 organisations presented their views. According to District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, out of these 32 speakers, 25 expressed full support for the Greenfield Airport project. Three to four speakers opposed the project, while the rest raised concerns related to better implementation, rehabilitation, and compensatory measures.
“This democratic exercise clearly showed overwhelming public support,” said Yadav. He added that the entire proceedings were recorded and will be sent to the government for further evaluation and action.
“The response was very positive,” explained DC Mridul Yadav. “The feedback will be carefully considered in the planning and development stages to ensure the project benefits the region while addressing legitimate concerns.”
The projected Greenfield Airport is viewed as a critical infrastructure project aimed at increasing connectivity and economic growth in southern Assam.
