More than 1000 accused arrested in a second phase of massive crackdown against child marriage in the early hours on Tuesday. At around 01:01 pm the arrested number increased to 1039. Assam Police launched a massive crackdown against child marriage. And the arrest is likely to be increase.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 1039 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn.”

Recent Detentions in Dhubri District:
According to recent reports, Assam police conducted a series of detentions in the Dhubri district. Which leads to the apprehension of over 191 individuals.
The breakdown of these detentions is as follows:
35 people were taken into custody in the Dhubri Sadar Police Station area. 42 in the Golakganj police station area, 7 in the Agomoni area, 12 in Tamarhat town, 42 in the Gauripur police station area. 30 in the Bilasipara locality, 11 in the Sapatgram area and 6 in the Chapar area within the district.
Arrests in Other Areas:
A total of 24 people from Gossaingaon, Sefanguri, Kachugaon, Bogoribari in Kokrajhar. While 39 people were arrested from Bongaigaon. Karimganj 49 people were arrested.

Previous Crackdown on Child Marriage:
In February, the Assam government initiated a rigorous crackdown against child marriage within the state. Which resulted in the arrest of 3,141 individuals in just one month. Those detained included not only men who had married underage girls but also family members and religious leaders suspected of facilitating these illegal unions.
In details, 154 individuals in the Dhubri district on charges related to child marriage, including husbands, parents, “Qazis,” and “Pujaris.”
In addition to the Dhubri district, law enforcement activities were carried out in other areas as well. The Kamarbandha police station in Golaghat conducted operations against child marriage. It resulting in the detention of one individual named Rituraj Saikia. In Dergaon area in Golaghat, the police detained three persons. In Nagarbera under Kamrup district, five individuals, namely Mahbub Islam, Mohiruddin, Sharif Ali, Shahjahan Ali and Mofizul Haque, were apprehended in separate raids.
Moving on to Kokrajhar district, the state police detained 24 individuals, and in Barpeta district, 76 persons were picked up as part of these efforts.
Furthermore, in the course of this extensive crackdown on child marriage, additional detentions took place:
39 individuals were taken into custody in South Salmara-Mankachar district. 6 in the Sontali and Rangapani areas of Boko. 5individuals in Udalguri, 30 in Patacharkuchi and Sarthebari areas of Bajali. 6 in Barghat, Bebejia, and Dhekiajuli areas of Sonitpur. 39 in Bongaigaon district, 49 in Karimganj district. Approximately 28 in Goalpara district, five from Tulsibari and Hatbajali localities in Rangia. Three from Baihata Chariali and one each from Changsari and Kamalpur areas.
It’s worth noting that additional detentions expected to occur throughout the day as part of the ongoing operation against child marriage.
