The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s (CJM) court has ordered the Nalbari police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against District Commissioner (DC) Varnali Deka. This follows a complaint by Arpana Sarmah, a suspended Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer, who accused Deka of harassment. Sarmah filed the complaint on May 8, 2024.
The case involves Sarmah’s claims of mental harassment and inappropriate behavior by DC Deka, who she says abused her authority. Sarmah, who was working as the circle officer of the Paschim Nalbari Revenue Circle, alleges that the incident happened on May 7, 2024, while she was managing operations at the issue and receipt counter of the 40-Tihu Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC).
Sarmah states that DC Deka scolded her for not ensuring the timely transfer of materials stored in trunks to their designated places by the workers.
She claims that Deka’s behavior became increasingly hostile, prompting her to try recording the conversation as proof of verbal abuse and continuous harassment. Feeling unsafe, Sarmah went to the Nalbari Police Station and reported the incident.
