Cachar Police launched a major crackdown on illegal beef trade across Cachar district on 1st July, 2025. Police launched operation in several areas from where eight individuals arrested and 6 shop seized for allegedly involved in the sale and storage of beef. This violates the Assam Cattle Preservation act, 2021.
Based on credible inputs the crackdown on illegal beef trade was carried out under Borkhola, Kalain, Udharbond, Silchar Sadar, Dholai and Lakhipur Police Stations.
During the operation in presence of magistrate police managed to recovered and seized 24.5 kg of banned meat, beef both cooked and raw from different meat shop and hotels.
All six establishments were sealed as per legal procedure, and the seized meat has been sent to the veterinary department for verification.
Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta confirmed to the media, “Operations were held in six areas where suspected beef was being illegally sold or stored. Eight persons have been arrested, and six FIRs have been lodged under relevant sections of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act.”
He emphasized that strict action would be taken against the offenders once the veterinary reports confirm the nature of the seized meat. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, strictly prohibits cattle slaughter and the sale or trade of beef in the state, and violators face serious legal consequences.

1.Modina Hotel, Borjatrapur under Borkhola Police Station
Seizure: 10 kg of raw meat
Arrested: Monir Uddin Barbhuiya (Peladahar, PS Silchar)
Ajmal Hussain Barbhuiya (Barjatrapur, PS Borkhola)
2. Taj Hotel, Khorochura under Kalain Police Station
Seizure: 1 Kg cooked meat
Arrested: Johorul Alom (Jagadishpur, PS Katigorah)
3. Jonota Hotel under Udharbond Police Station
Seizure: 5Kg raw and cooked meat
Arrested: Jabar Hussain Laskar (Manikpur Rajnagar, PS Silchar)
4. One Hotel under Silchar Sadar Police Station
Seizure: 1 Kg Raw meat
Arrested: Md. Abdul Basit (Katigorah part 3)
5. Aryan Hotel & Akib Frozen meat Shop under Dholai Police Station
Seizure: 500 grams (raw and cooked)
Arrested: Anwar Hussain Laskar (Islamabad)
Salam Ahmed Barbhuiya (Shyamacharanpur, PS Dholai)
6. Hotel Faruq, Baskandi under Lakhipur Police Station
Seizure: 7 Kg
Arrested: Faruk Ahmed (Baskandi Part III)
SSP Numal Mahatta issued a strict warning, stating, “The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, strictly prohibits the sale and transportation of beef. We urge the public to stay alert and avoid engaging in such illegal practices. Cachar Police will continue to take strong action against violators in the future.”
All eight accused are currently in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
