In a major breakdown, Cachar Police arrested 11 thieves allegedly involved in a series of burglary incidents across various wards and lanes of Silchar on Wednesday. Alongside the arrests, the police also recovered a substantial quantity of stolen goods.
Based on several complaints from residents regarding recent thefts, Cachar police launched crackdown to arrest thieves on Wednesday night, which result of 11 thieves’ arrest.
On Thursday, Superintendent of Police Nomal Mahatta addressed the media at Silchar Sadar Police Station, reaffirming the department’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He emphasized that the police remain vigilant in curbing criminal activity in the district.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta stated, “there have been several reports of robbery in Silchar. We launched a crackdown last night and arrested 11 thieves.”
He also added, “along with thieves we recovered and seized the theft items, utensils, LED TV sets, copper utensils, LPG cylinder, several two-wheeler helmets, thela, gold items worth approximately Rs 4 Lakh.”
The arrested thieves identified as Sagar Das, Kabir Hossain, Nirodh Das, Raju Das, Saif Ali, Bobby Das, Abdul Laskar, Sanjay Singh, Omkar Mali, and Dibyendu Das.
During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they used to sell stolen gold ornaments to a specific local jeweler. The jeweler would melt the gold and convert it into solid pieces, which the thieves later sold. Based on this confession and supporting evidence, the police have also arrested the jeweler involved.
SP said, “The robbers have confessed during interrogation that the gold ornaments were being melted and then sold. We recovered the solid gold and arrested the goldsmith as well.”
Further investigation is going on to arrest the rest of the thieves.
