In a significant judgment, the District and Sessions Court of Cachar on Monday (May 26) sentenced a 60-year-old man to 10 years of imprisonment in connection with a rape case reported in 2024. The convict, Matab Uddin Laskar, is a resident of Ward No. 10 in Dhanipur under Sonai Police Station limits.
The court, presided over by Judge Biprajit Roy, also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the convict. If the fine is not paid, Laskar will serve an additional three months in jail.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on May 7, 2024. The survivor, a woman from the Dhanehori area, had gone to a nearby shop around 7 PM to buy household items. On her way back, Laskar allegedly followed her. When she reached a secluded spot near a graveyard, he overpowered her, covered her mouth and dragged her into the graveyard, where he committed the crime.
Following the incident, the woman filed a complaint at the Sonai Police Station. Police registered Sonai PS Case No. 43/2024, launched an investigation and later submitted a chargesheet. A meticulous investigation was conducted by Women Sub-Inspector (WSI) Momita Nath, which led to the arrest of the accused and the submission of a detailed chargesheet.
The case went to trial, during which the court examined all evidence and heard both sides.
The court found Matab Uddin Laskar guilty under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Court delivered the 10-year prison sentence based on the severity of the offense.
