Economist and Chairman of India Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council Bibek Debroy, passed away at the age of 69 due to intestinal obstruction on Friday, November 1, 2024.
Delhi AIIMS said, “Bibek Debroy passed away today at 7 am due to intestinal obstruction.”
Mr. Debroy, a Padma Shri awardee, previously worked as the chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune.
PM Narendra paid his condoles and stated, “Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth.”
He also stated, “have known Dr. Debroy for many years. I will fondly remember his insights and passion for academic discourse. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.”
About Bibek Debroy
Debroy was born on January 25, 1955, in Shillong, now part of Meghalaya, to a Bengali Hindu family. He began his education at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya in Narendrapur, then attended Kolkata Presidency College and the Delhi School of Economics. Later, he received a Trinity College scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge.
Bibek Debroy has worked at several notable institutions, including Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Kolkata Presidency College, and the Delhi School of Economics. He has served as Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, Consultant for the Finance Ministry, and Secretary-General of the PhD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Throughout his career, he received several award including the Padma Shri Ward in 2025.
He has also held faculty positions at various colleges, been a permanent member of NITI Aayog, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, President of the Indian Statistical Institute, and Chancellor of Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute.
