Tension gripped the Cotton University area in Guwahati on June 7 after suspected Beef remains found dumped in dustbin near Cotton Hostel Road. The incident took place late at night and discovered by students and locals the next morning.

Cow remains—including a severed head, bones and internal organs—were found dumped openly near a public dustbin on Cotton College Road, close to Cotton University.

According to reports, unknown miscreants allegedly dumped the meat near the university premises during the night of Eid ul-Adha. This incident raised concerns over the timing and intent of the act.

The remains were first noticed by students residing in the SRB Hostel of Cotton University. He spotted the disturbing sight while returning from dinner late at night. The open dumping of the carcass in a public area has raised concerns over communal sensitivity, public hygiene and potential provocation

Guwahati Police Confirm Incident, Investigation Underway

An official from Panbazar Police Station confirmed the incident to The Assam Tribune, stating,
“Yes, the incident occurred yesterday. The situation remained tense late into the night. Protests are still ongoing outside the university, and we are investigating the matter.”

Visuals Go Viral, Cotton University Students Express Anger

Images and videos of the scene have reportedly gone viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and alarm. Students and residents alike have condemned the act and demanding an immediate investigation and firm action against the culprits.

Outrage Over Violation of Law

The incident has angered residents, students and community leaders, who fear it could be an attempt to disrupt peace and provoke communal tension in the area.

As per the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, cow meat is banned within a 5-kilometre radius of areas populated by Hindu, Sikh, or Jain communities.

A student from Cotton University expressed frustration, saying,
“This is a clear violation of the law. We feel deeply hurt and demand strict action and an apology from those involved.”

Authorities Investigate Source and Intent

Police are now investigating the matter and trying to trace the origin of the banned meat, who responsible to dumping it. With protests continuing outside the university, the administration has urged to act swiftly to maintain peace.
