The International Border with Bangladesh in Cachar is facing high tension on Thursday, where a group of Bangladeshi miscreants attacked Border Security Force (BSF) and Indian farmers near the border outpost. This attack left one BSF jawan and two Indian nationals injured. Reports also suggest that a BSF rifle was damaged during the confrontation.
Sources revealed that barbed wire fencing repair work has been ongoing in the area for the past two months. On Thursday afternoon, taking advantage of amid heavy rainfall, two Bangladeshi thieves reportedly entered Indian territory near the Kinna Khal BOP and attempted to steal iron materials meant for the fencing project.
On duty BSF personnel tried to intervene, but the thieves attempted to flee with the stolen materials. Local farmers Pabitramohan Das (66) and Nishitranjan Deb (50), who were tending fields near the fencing with BSF’s permission, witnessed the chase and rushed to assist.
As the situation escalated, 8 to 10 armed Bangladeshi men reportedly joined the thieves and attacked the BSF team with sharp weapons. A BSF jawan suffered a deep hand injury from a spade blow and was hospitalized at Katigorah Model Hospital, where he received stitches. Pabitramohan Das had his left thumb partially severed, while Nishitranjan Deb sustained stick injuries to his hand.
“The attackers struck the jawan’s rifle with sharp weapons, damaging it,” alleged both farmers. They also claimed the attackers issued threats, warning they would harm BSF personnel during any future flag march.
Though the BSF has not yet released an official statement, Katigorah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joseph V. Kevum confirmed the incident.
The attack has triggered fear among locals, who allege that Bangladeshi thieves often target Indian farmland beyond the fencing. Some believe the BSF’s intensified crackdown on such thefts may have provoked Thursday’s violent retaliation.
