Bangladesh PM Seikh Hasina on Monday resigns from her post as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and left her country. She is traveling and currently in Indian airspace. She is expected to land in Delhi at 5 pm
Seikh Hasina resigned from her post in the massive public protests that left more than 300 people dead since last month.
Army chief Gen Waker-uz-Zaman held a press conference and confirmed her resignation. He said that an Interim government will be formed to run the country.
ProthomAlo reported that Hasinaโs helicopter took off from Bangabhaban, the official residence of the Bangladesh President, at 2:30 p.m. local time. Sheikh Rehana, Hasinaโs younger sister, was also on board.โ
She has entered the India Airspace, there had a chance to land in Delhi at 5 pm after the flight was denied permission to land in Kolkata.
Meanwhile India has canceled all the train services to and fro from Bangaldesh.
Protesters breached the gates of Gono Bhaban, Hasinaโs official residence, around 3 p.m., according to The Daily Star. Thousands of people joined the Anti-Discrimination Studentsโ Movementโs โMarch to Dhaka,โ moving from the Mirpur 10 roundabout towards Farmgate.
How the protest escalated?
Last month, over 150 people were killed and thousands injured in violence sparked by student protests against government job quotas.
The students Against Discrimination group, led by the previous protest, now leading fresh protest. On July 21, the Supreme court struck down the majority of quotas, putted an end of the protest. ย However, demonstrate returned last week, demanding apologies, internet restoration, college reopening and to release the student protestor who jailed.
By the weakened, protestor had grown, demanding of Hasinaโs resignation. The students’ group called for a statewide non-cooperation protest beginning Sunday with the single demand: Hasina must resign.
