Assam is going to begin the Special Intensive Revision of the Voters List, after the Bihar detected more than 5 million fake voters ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. The Revision of Voter list will start within 15/20 days.
Amid the ongoing state-wide uproar over the issue of Bangladeshi foreigners. The State Chief Election Commissioner has issued special instructions to all district commissioners and election officers to prepare for the special comprehensive revision of the voter list.
The Chief Election Commissioner has directed the Election Officers of all districts, EROs (Election Registrar Officer) and EROs of all districts to stay in their districts and not to put additional workload on data entry operators.
The BTC has also directed the election officers of the five districts not to be involved in the election process and to make alternative arrangements for the September elections. The directive, sent by the Chief Election Commissioner of the state, clearly states that the process of comprehensive revision of the voter lists in Assam on the basis of the 2005 voter lists will be initiated within 15/20 days and the schedule will be announced.
The Election Commission has already published the 2005 voter list of Assam on its website and will send it to the representatives of all recognized political parties. The Chief Election Commissioner said the district communication centers would be activated from the office of the Election Officer.
Significance ahead of 2026 Assam Assembly Election
It is worth mentioning that the current situation of demographic change in Assam and the comprehensive revision of voter rolls in the state ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections is considered very significant and important. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a statement saying that citizens of Myanmar, Nepal and other countries are also included in the voter lists of Bihar. Millions of votes were also cast in the names of deceased persons and displaced persons in Bihar. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine what the situation could be like in Assam, which is suffering from the problem of Bangladeshis.
The two main political parties in the state, the Congress and the BJP, are at opposite poles over the massive voter roll revision process to be launched in the state. While state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma yesterday welcomed the Election Commission’s move, PPCC President Gaurav Gogoi demanded a special discussion in Parliament on the comprehensive amendment process and accused the ruling BJP of using the Election Commission at its own discretion.
