Assam Police have uncovered a wide-ranging passport fraud racket operating in the Patharkandi area of Sribhumi district.
According to police, the scam came to light earlier this month when a passport application was submitted under the name Faruk Ahmed, a man who had already passed away. Faruk, a native of Patharkandi, had his identity misused to falsely show the foreign national as an Indian citizen.
Two suspects identified as Burhan Uddin (38) and Faizur Rahman (38), have been arrested for trying to help a Bangladeshi national obtain an Indian passport by using forged documents created in the name of a deceased Indian citizen.
“During routine document checks, we found several inconsistencies in the submitted documents — including the birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and PAN card — all of which were faked in Faruk Ahmed’s name,” a senior officer said. “Our investigation confirmed that these documents were forged to support the passport application for a Bangladeshi individual.”
Acting quickly on this lead, police arrested Burhan and Faizur, who were allegedly behind the creation of the fake identity papers. A large collection of forged documents was also recovered from their possession.
The duo has been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court and is currently in judicial custody.
